Big Friend, Little Friend Ride at Elk Point

Loved this ride! Cindy and I started off sucking the wheels of a pace line of about 8Siouxland cyclists for about the first 25 miles - that was fun! Around the Spink overpass the group broke up as some riders skipped the Union Grove loop. Of course, we chose to ride all the miles so we headed up towards the park. By this time Ed had joined us.

We were on a time schedule as Cindy had a wedding to attend in Brookings - so there was no lollygagging! But we were riding at a pretty good pace and found ourselves a bit ahead of schedule which meant we had time to share a piece of pie at the Spink Cafe.

It was a perfect day for a ride and the three of us had a great time riding together. We finished with an aveage speed of 17.3 mph for the 55 mile ride. So we even had time for a quick bite to eat at Los Amigos in Elk Point before Cindy's husband picked her up.

This was my fastest average speed of the year and it felt good!

That's pretty darn fast for 55 miles! I've never heard of this ride, is it an annual thing?

It is an annual ride - I've gone for about 3 years. The route goes from Elk Point to Vermillion and then over by Union Grove State Park, the Spink cafe and back to Elk Point. There were probably around 70 riders. It is very well supported ride - lots of SAGS with gatoraide, water, bananas, and Bing candy bars!

BIng candy bars? Bleh!!! That's like the ONLY candy bar that I don't like. I tried them again while working for KTIV (Hey, fling me a bing!!), no luck. I ship them to a cousin who loves them, but can't acquire them in North Carolina.

I was thinking of you guys on Saturday! Thanks for the report. And you're making super progress this year!!!

I LOVE CHERRY BING CANDY BARS. I grew up in Sioux City and like to get a big box of them from the Palmer shop. I think you can get 5 lbs for about $10.
Best candy bar EVER !!

That Ed, he gets all the ladies and the BING BARS. Sorry I missed the ride, I was home helping Mom and Dad with some yard work/house work.

Saw your comment on Athena Diaries and had to hop over and say how much I loved South Dakota! I just got back from a cross country road trip where I visited your fabulous state for the first time. I only did the touristy things but it was amazing. I can't wait for a return trip. (And now I'll know to look for Bing candy bars!)
